Naval combat in Age of Empires 2 follows the same rock-paper-scissors logic as land units — but fewer players know the counter triangle. Control the water on maps like Islands, Archipelago, or Baltic and you control the game. Here is the full naval breakdown.
The Naval Counter Triangle
Age of Empires 2 naval has three main unit classes in a counter cycle:
- Galley line beats Demolition Ships — pierce damage kills Demo Ships before they close and detonate
- Fire Ships beat Galley line — fire damage bonus vs. ships; Galleys are fragile vs. sustained fire
- Demolition Ships beat Fire Ships — instant area explosion; Fire Ships group together and get chain-killed
How to Counter Fire Ships
Fire Ships are strong vs. Galleys and deal continuous fire damage. They need to close range to deal damage — they're vulnerable at distance.
- Area explosion kills multiple Fire Ships at once. Fire Ships naturally cluster — one Demo Ship detonating in the middle of a Fire Ship group is devastating.
- The upgrade beats the base version in the direct fire-vs-fire matchup. If both players have Fire Ships, the upgrade wins.
- Pierce damage at range. Fire Ships need to close in — War Galleys kite them while dealing consistent ranged damage. Works with good micro.
- High HP and ranged — Fire Ships struggle to deal enough fire damage before dying to Galleon volleys. Kite backwards while shooting.
How to Counter Demolition Ships
Demo Ships are the naval nuclear option — massive area explosion on contact. They are slow and fragile, dying to sustained ranged damage before reaching their target.
- Pierce damage at range destroys Demo Ships before they close. The standard response — fast Galley production wins the Demo Ship fight efficiently.
- Long-range artillery sinks Demo Ships safely from maximum range. One Cannon Galleon can snipe incoming Demo Ships before they get anywhere close.
- Not a unit but a tactic. Spread your ships so Demo Ships can't chain-kill multiple units. A Demo Ship detonating near a single Galley is a poor trade.
How to Counter Galleys and War Galleys
Galleys are the fast, cheap ranged ship that controls early naval maps. They're vulnerable to fire damage.
- Fire damage bonus vs. ships. Fire Ships are the designated Galley counter — they deal sustained fire damage that Galleys can't sustain.
- Upgraded version — more HP and damage. Dominates the Galley fight even harder.
- Burst damage works if you can catch a clustered Galley formation. Risk: Galleys shoot fast and can kill Demo Ships at range before they detonate.
How to Counter Galleons
Galleons are the endgame ranged ship — high HP, long range, powerful volleys. They dominate in open water but are slow and expensive.
- Artillery vs. artillery at max range. Cannon Galleons out-range Galleons and deal blast damage. The siege-vs-siege of the naval game.
- Burst area damage wipes grouped Galleons. Galleons are slow and can't easily dodge incoming Demo Ships. One Heavy Demo Ship vs. 3 grouped Galleons is a win.
- Numbers game — Galleons kite Fire Ships with superior range but enough Fire Ships closing in deal sustained fire damage. Requires overwhelming numbers.
How to Counter Cannon Galleons
Cannon Galleons bombard shores and coastal buildings. They're slow and fragile — the counter is fast interception.
- Cannon Galleons have low HP for their cost. Fast Galleys or War Galleys intercept and sink them quickly before they can bombard structures.
- Area explosion instantly destroys Cannon Galleons. Very cost-efficient if multiple Cannon Galleons are grouped.
Dromon (Armenians, Byzantines, and others)
The Dromon is a unique ranged ship available to several civilizations including Armenians and Byzantines. It fires bolts that deal pierce damage and can target both ships and land units near shore.
- Fire damage bypasses Dromon's pierce resistance. Close range before Dromon can maximize bolt damage output.
- Area explosion if Dromons cluster. Works best when catching a group unaware.
