Cavalry Archers are the hardest unit type to counter in Age of Empires 2. They move while shooting, kite anything with less speed, and the strongest versions — Mangudai, War Wagons — define the endgame meta. The key insight: no single unit counters them. You need a composition.
Why Single Counters Fail Against Cavalry Archers
Standard counter logic breaks down with Cavalry Archers:
- Skirmishers have the attack bonus vs. archers — but they are slow. Cavalry Archers just run.
- Halberdiers have the cavalry bonus — but they are even slower. Same problem.
- Regular Cavalry can catch them — but Cavalry Archers deal enough pierce damage to bleed cavalry while kiting.
The solution is always a composition — fast units that force engagement combined with ranged units that deal bonus damage.
How to Counter Cavalry Archers
- Berbers / Magyars unique unit — a Skirmisher on horseback. Fast enough to chase Cavalry Archers, has the attack bonus vs. archers, and deals pierce damage. The single best direct counter to Cavalry Archers in the game.
- Attack bonus vs. cavalry applies to Cavalry Archers. Fast enough to threaten them in open field. Best used in the mid-game when Cavalry Archers don't yet have all upgrades.
- Berbers unique — ranged anti-cavalry. Mirrors the Cavalry Archer fight and wins due to the cavalry bonus. One of the best counter-cavalry ranged units in the game.
- Attack bonus applies but Skirms can't chase. Works defensively — place behind walls or in chokepoints where Cavalry Archers can't freely kite. Effective on closed maps and in base defense.
- Raids back and forces the Cavalry Archer player to defend their economy. Hussars don't win a direct fight against massed Cavalry Archers but change the tempo of the game.
- Area damage punishes tight Cavalry Archer formations. Requires micro to land shots since Cavalry Archers can dodge slow projectiles. Best combined with Genitours or Hussar pressure.
How to Counter Mangudai (Mongols)
Mangudai are the best cavalry archer in the game — extremely fast, high pierce attack, bonus damage vs. siege weapons, and cheap enough to mass easily. They require a dedicated response and punish passive play hard.
- One of the few units fast enough to match Mangudai movement. The attack bonus vs. archers makes the fight favorable. If you have access to Genitours, prioritize them against Mongols.
- Can absorb Mangudai fire and deal strong cavalry bonus damage back. The Hindus/generic camel civs with Imperial Camel Rider have the easiest time against Mongols.
- Skirms absorb Mangudai fire and return bonus damage; Onager area-deletes groups. The combination works even without fast units because Skirms force Mangudai to keep repositioning.
- Mongols' weakness is that Mangudai die fast to melee if caught. A large Hussar mass forces the Mongol player to micromanage constantly. Raid with Hussars to split attention.
- Mangudai cost 55 food + 65 gold. Conversions are high value. Mongols often skip Faith upgrade — Monks can chain-convert if the opponent doesn't respond quickly.
How to Counter Heavy Cavalry Archers
Heavy Cavalry Archers have more armor and damage than the base Cavalry Archer, making the Skirmisher counter less reliable on its own.
- Still fast enough to chase. Attack bonus + mobility. Genitours remain the primary counter even against Heavy CA.
- Most reliable melee anti-cavalry vs. Heavy CA. Survives long enough to deal meaningful cavalry bonus damage.
- Less efficient than vs. standard CA due to higher armor but still the cheapest ranged option. Needs numbers.
- Punishes grouped Heavy CA. Requires micro — a good Cavalry Archer player will spread to avoid Mangonel shots.
How to Counter War Wagons (Koreans)
War Wagons are Cavalry Archers with dramatically more HP and armor. They are slow for cavalry archers but extremely tanky. The kiting problem is less severe but the tankiness is a new challenge.
- War Wagons are cavalry class — the camel bonus applies and Camels can absorb War Wagon arrows while dealing consistent bonus damage.
- Area damage; War Wagons group together due to their slow speed. Mangonels deal full area damage to each War Wagon.
- War Wagons cost 80 food + 60 gold. Conversions are very high value. Koreans often skip Faith — exploit this with Monk chains.
- Attack bonus applies but War Wagon's high HP means Skirms need many more numbers. Use as support, not primary counter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counters Mangudai in Age of Empires 2?
Elite Genitour (Berbers / Magyars) is the most reliable counter — fast enough to chase, has attack bonus vs. archers. Imperial Camel Rider deals bonus cavalry damage and tanks hits. Hussar masses force Mongols to split attention and micromanage.
Why don't Skirmishers counter cavalry archers?
Skirmishers have the attack bonus vs. archers but they are too slow to chase cavalry archers. Cavalry archers simply run away and kite Skirmishers indefinitely. The counter must be a composition — fast units that force engagement, not just Skirmishers alone.
