Age of Empires 2 Elephant Counters

War Elephant · Battle Elephant · Ballista Elephant · Elephant Archer · Armored & Siege Elephant

Elephants are the simplest counter problem in Age of Empires 2 and the one most games are lost to anyway: 180 to 600 HP moving at 0.6 to 0.9 speed. That HP pool makes ordinary damage worthless, and the low speed makes the Spearman line — 1.0 speed, no gold cost, +28 against the elephant class — the one unit that both catches an elephant and hurts it. Camels do not work, because elephants do not carry the cavalry class. Archers do not work either. Here is what each counter deals per hit and how many hits it needs, for every elephant in the game. Two of them, the War Elephant and the Ballista Elephant, are Castle unique units — the rest of that category is covered on the Unique Unit Counters page. All values are base stats from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition without Blacksmith upgrades.

Universal rule: Build the Spearman line and add Monks. Halberdiers have +28 against the elephant class and cost no gold; Monks convert a 255-resource Elite War Elephant for 100 gold. Add a Mangonel behind the line — its damage counts as melee-type, so elephant pierce armor never applies.

How do you counter elephants in AoE2?

With the Spearman line and Monks. A Halberdier has +28 against the elephant class and deals 33 damage per hit to a Battle Elephant — 8 hits for its 250 HP, 14 for a 450 HP War Elephant, 19 for the 600 HP Elite version. A Monk costs 100 gold and converts an Elite War Elephant worth 255 resources. Archers do not work: an Arbalest deals 4 damage per hit.

Every elephant in the game is the same problem in different packaging: 180 to 600 HP moving at 0.6 to 0.9 speed. That HP pool makes ordinary damage worthless and the low speed makes the Spearman line — 1.0 speed, no gold cost, +28 bonus — the one unit that both catches elephants and hurts them. The three answers below cover every elephant unit in the game.

How do you counter War Elephants in AoE2?

Halberdiers and Monks. A Halberdier deals 33 damage per hit to a War Elephant — 14 hits for 450 HP, 19 for the 600 HP Elite version — and costs no gold against the elephant's 255 resources. A Monk converts one for 100 gold, and at 0.8 speed the elephant cannot leave the Monk's 9-tile range.

The Persian War Elephant is the heaviest unit in the game: 450 HP and 15 attack, rising to 600 HP and 20 attack for the Elite version, with 1 melee and 2 to 3 pierce armor at 0.8 speed. It kills anything it reaches, so the whole fight is about numbers of cheap bodies and about not letting it reach your Monks.

Fight elephants in an open line: Set Halberdiers to a spread formation before contact. War Elephants deal trample damage, so a tight clump loses several Halberdiers per swing while a loose line loses one.

How do you counter Battle Elephants in AoE2?

Pikemen in Castle Age, Halberdiers in Imperial. A Pikeman deals 28 damage per hit to a 250 HP Battle Elephant (9 hits) and a Halberdier 33 (8 hits, 10 for the 300 HP Elite version). Both cost 35 food + 25 wood and no gold against the elephant's 100 food + 70 gold.

The Battle Elephant is the regional elephant, available to Khmer, Burmese, Malay, Vietnamese and Bengalis: 250 HP, 12 attack and 1/2 armor, rising to 300 HP, 14 attack and 1/3 for the Elite version, at 0.9 speed. It arrives in Castle Age, which is why Pikemen matter more here than against any other elephant.

How do you counter Ballista Elephants in AoE2?

Halberdiers and Mangonels. A Halberdier deals 34 damage per hit to a Ballista Elephant — 8 hits for its 250 HP, 9 for the 280 HP Elite version — because the Ballista Elephant has 0 melee armor. Do not shoot at it: with 3 pierce armor an Arbalest needs 84 hits.

The Khmer Ballista Elephant is a unique unit that carries the elephant armor class: 250 HP, 9 attack at 5 range and 0/3 armor at 0.8 speed, firing a bolt that passes through everything in a line. Its damage output is the reason to kill it fast; its 0 melee armor is the reason you can.

Approach from the flank: The Ballista Elephant's bolt passes through every unit in a straight line. Send your Halberdiers in a wide arc so at most one or two are in the line of fire at any moment.

How do you counter Elephant Archers in AoE2?

Halberdiers and siege. An Elephant Archer has 230 HP but 0 melee armor, so a Halberdier deals 34 damage per hit — 7 hits, 9 for the 280 HP Elite version. A Mangonel needs 6 shots. Its own 6 attack is the lowest of any elephant, so cheap infantry survives the approach.

The Elephant Archer of the Hindustanis and Bengalis is a mounted archer on an elephant body: 230 HP with 0/2 armor, 6 attack at 4 range and 0.9 speed. It is durable rather than dangerous — 6 attack (Elite 7) and 70% accuracy — so the question is only how efficiently you remove 230 HP.

How do you counter Armored and Siege Elephants in AoE2?

Melee only — any melee unit. Both have negative melee armor (−2), so every melee unit deals its attack value plus 2. A Halberdier deals 36 damage per hit (5 hits for a 180 HP Armored Elephant, 7 for a 220 HP Siege Elephant) and a Champion 16. Arrows are useless: 140 to 150 pierce armor reduces an Arbalest to 1 damage per hit.

The Hindustani Armored Elephant and its Siege Elephant upgrade are battering rams on legs: 180 to 220 HP, 4 attack, 0.6 speed and −2 melee armor against 140 to 150 pierce armor. They exist to knock down buildings, and their armor profile is the exact mirror of a Battering Ram's — immune to arrows, softer than normal against everything melee.

Never answer these with archers or Scorpions: 140 to 150 pierce armor reduces every pierce attack to the 1-damage minimum — 180 hits for an Arbalest. Send Champions, Halberdiers or a Mangonel.

How do you counter the Khmer, Persians and Hindustanis in AoE2?

All three with the Spearman line, but at different times. Khmer bring Battle Elephants and Ballista Elephants in Castle Age, so build Pikemen early. Persians bring the 450 HP War Elephant, so build Halberdiers and Monks. Hindustanis bring Elephant Archers and Siege Elephants, so build Halberdiers and a Mangonel.

Elephant civilizations differ mainly in when the elephant arrives and what it is trying to kill. The counter unit is the same in all three cases; the timing and the support around it are not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you counter elephants in Age of Empires 2?

With the Spearman line. A Halberdier has a +28 bonus against the elephant class, which on top of 6 base attack gives 33 damage per hit against 1 melee armor — 8 hits for a 250 HP Battle Elephant, 14 for a 450 HP War Elephant and 19 for the 600 HP Elite War Elephant. A Pikeman deals 28 and the Inca Kamayuk 26 from the second rank thanks to its 1-tile range. Monks are the second answer: an Elite War Elephant costs 255 resources against a Monk's 100 gold. Archers do nothing — an Arbalest deals 4 damage per hit.

What is the best counter to the War Elephant in AoE2?

The Halberdier, and a Monk behind it. A Halberdier deals 33 damage per hit to a War Elephant, so 14 hits for the 450 HP version and 19 for the 600 HP Elite version, and it costs 35 food + 25 wood with no gold against the elephant's 170 food + 85 gold. Monks convert the elephant outright for 100 gold, and at 0.8 speed it cannot leave a Monk's 9-tile range. Support both with Mangonels: 39 melee-type damage per shot, 12 shots per War Elephant, unaffected by its pierce armor.

How do you counter the Ballista Elephant in AoE2?

Halberdiers and Mangonels. The Ballista Elephant has 250 HP but 0 melee armor, so a Halberdier deals its full 6 attack plus the +28 elephant bonus = 34 damage per hit, 8 hits, and 9 for the 280 HP Elite version. A Mangonel deals 40 melee-type damage for 7 shots and ignores the elephant's 3 pierce armor entirely. Do not shoot it: an Arbalest deals 3 damage per hit, or 84 hits. Approach in a wide arc, because its bolt passes through every unit in a straight line.

How do you counter the Khmer in AoE2?

Build Pikemen early and Halberdiers later, because both Khmer threats are elephants. The Battle Elephant has 250 HP and dies in 9 Pikeman hits or 8 Halberdier hits, and the Ballista Elephant — 250 HP, 9 attack, 5 range, 0 melee armor — also dies in 9 Pikeman hits or 8 Halberdier hits. Khmer elephants move at 0.8 to 0.9 against the Spearman line's 1.0, so your counter unit can actually engage them. Add Monks: at 170 to 180 resources per elephant, every conversion for 100 gold is a large swing. Do not answer Khmer with archers.

Do camels work against elephants in AoE2?

No. Elephants carry their own armor class and not the cavalry class, so a Heavy Camel Rider's +18 cavalry bonus does not apply at all. It deals 7 attack minus 1 melee armor = 6 damage per hit to a Battle Elephant, which is 42 hits for 250 HP. The unit that looks like the anti-cavalry answer is one of the worst choices on the field. Use the Spearman line instead — its +28, +25 and +15 bonuses target the elephant class directly.

Why don't archers work against elephants in AoE2?

Because elephants combine a large HP pool with pierce armor and no archer has a bonus against the elephant class. An Arbalest's 6 attack against a Battle Elephant's 2 pierce armor is 4 damage per hit — 63 hits — and against an Elite War Elephant's 600 HP and 3 pierce armor it is 3 damage and 200 hits. Elite Skirmishers deal the 1-damage minimum. The Armored and Siege Elephant are the extreme case with 140 to 150 pierce armor: every arrow deals exactly 1. The two ranged units that do work, the Scorpion and the Genoese Crossbowman, work because of an elephant bonus, not because of pierce damage.

Which elephant is the best Monk conversion target?

The Elite War Elephant, at 170 food + 85 gold for 600 HP and 20 attack — 255 resources handed over for a Monk's 100 gold, and it walks straight back into the Persian army. After that: the Armored and Siege Elephant at 215 resources, the Ballista Elephant at 180 and the Battle Elephant at 170. The pattern is consistent, because elephants move at 0.6 to 0.9 and a Monk's conversion range is 9 tiles — the slower and more expensive the elephant, the better the conversion.

Which elephants are unique units and which are regional units?

Only two are unique units: the War Elephant (Persians) and the Ballista Elephant (Khmer), both trained at the Castle. The Battle Elephant is a regional unit shared by Khmer, Burmese, Malay, Vietnamese and Bengalis, the Elephant Archer by Hindustanis and Bengalis, and the Armored and Siege Elephant belong to the Hindustanis. The distinction does not change the counter — every one of them carries the elephant armor class and takes +28 from a Halberdier.

How do you counter Siege Elephants in AoE2?

Any melee unit, and never arrows. The Armored Elephant and Siege Elephant have −2 melee armor, so every melee unit deals its attack value plus 2: a Halberdier 36 damage per hit (5 hits for the 180 HP Armored Elephant, 7 for the 220 HP Siege Elephant), a Champion 16, a Knight 12. A Mangonel deals 42 per shot because its damage counts as melee-type. Their 140 to 150 pierce armor reduces every arrow to 1 damage, so an Arbalest would need 180 hits.
